Is there a minimally invasive surgical procedure for repairing the Diastasis Recti in men?
Diastasis Recti in Men. In this video we are going to dive into a topic that might not get a lot of attention but is incredibly important for many men out there – diastasis recti. You might have heard about this condition in women mostly in the context of pregnancy, but around 10-30% of men may have Diastasis recti. So Let’s explore what it is, how to recognize it, and most importantly, discuss about Dr. Iraniha’s new minimally invasive procedure to treat this condition.
Diastasis recti in Men occurs when the two rectus abdominis muscles, commonly known as the “six-pack” muscles, in front of the abdominal wall, separate from each other and create a bulge in the middle of the abdomen. This condition can be both a cosmetic concern and a source of discomfort in men. However, many men may not recognize the symptoms or relate them to diastasis recti, which can lead to under reporting this condition in men. Men with diastasis recti may experience various symptoms, including a noticeable bulge in the abdomen, abdominal discomfort, lower back pain, abnormal posture and difficulty with certain physical activities. At our Orange County Diastasis Recti Repair Center, Dr. Iraniha explaining what are the factors for this condition.
There are several factors that can contribute to this condition in men including genetic predisposition, obesity, aging, improper heavy lifting and previous abdominal surgery.
But how do you know if you have diastasis recti? A simple self-check involves lying on your back and gently lifting your head—if you feel a gap or bulge along the mid line, you might have diastasis recti.”
How do we treat Diastasis recti?
Physical Therapy with a tailored exercise program for core muscle could potentially improve the overall strength of the core muscles but Diastasis recti or separation of the six pack muscles is an anatomical abnormality and can not be fixed only by physical therapy and laparoscopy surgery intervention may be necessary to repair this gap and restore the normal abdominal wall anatomy.
There are multiple surgical options available for repairing the Diastasis recti in Men, including traditional tummy tuck surgery. But let me introduce you to my innovative minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery procedure, which provides a compelling alternative to traditional tummy tuck surgery.
In this procedure, I begin by creating three small 1 cm incisions in the lower abdomen. Using a camera and specialized instruments, I repair the Diastasis recti from the rib cage to the lower abdomen from the inside. This eliminates the need for extensive skin separation and therefore offers less pain, faster recovery and less postoperative risks and complications. For some men that’s the only procedure they need but in individuals with excess skin , after the laparoscopic procedure, a curve-linear incision is made in the bikini line and the lower abdominal skin will be separated off the muscle up to the level of the belly button. This allows for the removal of excess skin, including the three smaller laparoscopic incisions. This part of the procedure is known as “Dri tuck” or mini mini tuck.
By minimizing the skin separation, disruption of circulation, and trauma associated with the surgery, this unique combo procedure significantly reduces the risk of postoperative complications, promotes a faster recovery and improve the aesthetic outcome. However, our new laparoscopic procedure with or without mini mini tuck offers reasonable alternative treatment, especially for patients with only abdominal wall bulge and minimal excess skin. It is also an excellent choice for patients at a higher risk of postoperative complications who are interested in a less invasive surgery with a faster recovery time.
