Hemorrhoidectomy by Dr. Iraniha

Hemorrhoidectomy is the surgical removal of hemorrhoids. Hemorrhoids are cushions of the venous blood vessels that are located around the anal canal. Increase pressure in these cushions of venous blood vessels in different conditions such as chronic constipation and pregnancy would enlarge and engorge these vessels and lead to enlargement and swelling of these cushions (hemorrhoids). Patients with enlarged hemorrhoids could present with burning sensation and itching in the anal regions as well as on and off bleeding after bowel activity. Majority of patients with symptomatic hemorrhoids could be treated with conservative therapy with high fiber diet, anti inflammatory cream and local anal care. Hemorrhoidectomy is usually reserved for severe hemorrhoids if more conservative treatment measures fail to alleviate the symptoms.

Hemorrhoidectomy Surgery

The hemorrhoidectomy surgery is performed under general anesthesia in an outpatient setting. After the surgery patient would have one week of discomfort especially during and after bowel activity but the discomfort would decrease significantly afterwards and it usually takes one month for full recovery. This operation has minimal potential of postoperative bleeding, infection, recurrence of hemorrhoids and rare possibility of damage to the anal sphincter.
