Laparoscopic Surgery by Dr. Iraniha

Laparoscopic surgery is a minimally invasive surgical technique in which few special ports are inserted into the abdominal cavity through small incisions, the abdominal cavity is insufflated with co2 to create space to work and scope and special instruments are inserted into the abdominal cavity through the ports to perform the surgical tasks. By doing that a need for creating a large abdominal wall incision during open traditional surgery is eliminated and the surgical trauma to the patient is minimized. In 1985, Dr. Eric Muhe was performed the first laparoscopic surgery to remove the gallbladder. That was the beginning of a revolution in surgical field. Soon after, this approach to the surgical problems was popularized and extended to the different disciplines of surgery. In 1993, 500,000 patients in US underwent laparoscopic cholecystectomy. Soon thereafter some of the pioneers tried to perform more complex operations with this technique and due to their perseverance, now thirty years later almost every surgical procedures could be done laparoscopically.

Laparoscopic Surgery Benefits

Laparoscopic surgery minimizes the trauma to the patient and therefore is associated with less mortality and morbidity and better patient`s quality of life with less post-operative pain, less hospital stay, faster recovery and return to work. However, laparoscopic surgery has some inherent limitations and performing the complex surgical tasks and procedures could be extremely difficult. Therefore, even now most laparoscopy surgeons are not applying laparoscopic surgery technique to perform the more difficult and advanced surgical procedures. These operations should be done by a laparoscopic expert. Laparoscopic expert is a surgeon who is dedicated his or her time and effort to laparoscopic surgery with excellent hand-eye-video coordination, vast expertise of application of the laparoscopic equipment and instrumentation, great understanding of the anatomy, extensive knowledge of potential for complications and problems and the ways of solving them. Laparoscopic expert does have the expertise to perform the open operation as well as laparoscopic one and therefore is able to customize the best technique for the individual patient based on the patient`s problem and other associated medical circumstances. Laparoscopic surgery is like an art and it takes years of practice to gain the expertise to be able to perform the more advanced laparoscopic procedures and it requires desire to learn, diligent work and practice.
