Robotic inguinal hernia repair, long-term quality of life & outcomes by Dr Iraniha
Five years ago if someone asked my opinion about the robotic surgery, as a laparoscopic surgeon, I would say that I was extremely skeptical and saw no real value. But I am so grateful to one of the great nurses who encouraged me to try out the robot at that time. I remember how amazing I felt the first time that I sat behind the console of a robot and instantly realized the potential of this amazing surgical platform. As a surgeon, at Surgical Oasis a Orange County Surgery Center, behind the console, I felt more powerful and capable to perform the even extremely difficult and complex surgical tasks with ease. Of course, initially to get to the necessary expertise, one has to endure a long process of learning and practicing how to operate and maximize the usage of the robot, gaining the necessary leadership in the operating room behind the console and away from the patient, adapting to the new surgical approach, adjusting and standardizing the steps, and understanding the potential for complications and how to prevent or solve them. But once the essential mastery is acquired, the robotic platform with incredible wrested instrumentation and enhanced visualization allows the surgeon to perform the complex and difficult surgical tasks with ease, more precision and less trauma. These benefits positively affect the patient`s recovery and outcome. Over last five years I have done hundreds of robotic surgeries , hernia repairs and from day one I was extremely determined to pay a close attention to my patients` recovery, complications and outcomes. These results were gathered into a patient-centered prospective cohort study and recently has been published in the Journal of Robotic Surgery which I`d like to share with my patients and colleagues.
Robotic inguinal hernia repair & laparoscopic surgery technology
Over last thirty years, laparoscopic surgery has strongly demonstrated the ability to save so many lives by decreasing the morbidity and mortality of the surgical intervention and improving patient`s quality of life by decreasing their pain, hospital stay and recovery time. In my opinion, robotic surgery is another revolution in the surgical history. Robotic platform, not only has eliminated the inherent limitations of laparoscopic technology in regards to instrumentation and visualization but also has opened an unlimited horizon for advancement in surgical technology.
